The next morning I awoke to an empty bed. Hardly surprising, considering our situation. I had no doubt that Elias had slipped through the tapestry and out the cove, while Kai would have had to exit quietly through the front door to my rooms while the guards switched their watch.

We’d spent most of the night in each other’s arms. It was a strange thing, unburdening the truth. I felt lighter, now that we all knew each other, and the depths of each other’s secrets. Spending all of last night talking—when we weren’t doing other things—speaking truths of the palace and our lives.

It was comforting to know that my feelings weren’t misguided and that I was not thought less of because of the callings of my heart. It was empowering. To have Elias and Kai and for them to know the truth and not care.

“You are the mate of the Dragon Prince,” Kai had whispered against my skin last night. “Dragons hoard treasure. It’s only fitting that you do so as well.”

I suspected he was hoarding us as well. The three of us, we were formidable together.

And for once, here in this palace, surrounded by all this finery, I finally felt content.

I got up and started getting ready for the day.
